Simply known as Bob, Dillon delved into the indie market with Gus Van Sandt’s riveting examination of pill-whoring crooks. While Rourke may steal the film, it is Dillon who ultimately gets the key scene, coming face to face with his own reflection in the face of tragedy. Orchestrating intriguing screen chemistry with Mickey Rourke, who portrays the mysterious older brother to Dillon’s rambunctious protagonist Rusty James, Dillon settles well into the lead and crafts an offbeat coming of age character who is not defined entirely by a time period, but more by the mindset of youth. Hinton film (following Tex and The Outsiders) was also the most surreal. Clearly such a racially motivated character demands the utmost calculation and Paul Haggis’ Oscar winning screenplay injects sincere emotional moments into Ryan’s role in the ensemble piece, allowing Dillon to succeed with every character arc he is handed.ĭillon’s third S.E. Surprisingly a perfect fit for Officer Ryan, a racist LAPD patrolman who has seen enough of the streets in his day, Dillon brings sympathy, frustration, and redemption to the supporting role that landed him an Oscar nomination. Look for the over the top “We’ll do it for Johnny!” line and then juxtapose that with his scenes mentoring his young fugitive friends, and you’ll find a complex performance that defined the S.E. As Dallas Winston, the brooding rebellious teen that’s as close to a father figure as a couple of Midwestern Greasers have, Dillon plays the iconic teen role with pop and subtlety. Matt Dillon got the part that every young actor in the early ‘80s would have killed for.
